Governor Gladys Berejiklian criticized the current lockdown restrictions in Greater Sydney and why the government has not followed the rules more strictly.
Sky News political editor Andrew Clennell asked when Ms. Berejiklian “admitted it was time to strengthen the lockdown” and pointed out that the infection rate of infected people in the community has been high.
As usual, Ms. Berejiklian said that these rules are based on “best health advice.”
“Please know that we are never afraid to make the difficult decisions needed to keep the community safe. This is our absolute priority,” she said.
Krennell then tried to interject, which evoked a harsh response from the governor: “You asked a very important question, so I am grateful for your permission to complete my answer.
“We rely on the best health advice available, and given our track record, the people of New South Wales know that we are never afraid to make difficult decisions to ensure the safety of the community.”
When Clennell pointed out that the number of community cases has not fallen, Ms. Berejiklian said that the Delta variant means that New South Wales is dealing with unprecedented conditions.
She said that if New South Wales did not lock down during the lockdown, the number of cases would triple “day after day”.
But Clennell is still unfinished, adding: “The best health advice allowed us to lock down for 5 weeks.”
“We took the actions we did during public medical and health disasters. We stick to our decisions because they are based on the best health advice, but I say to the people and citizens of our state, if we need it, please understand this. Link settings or do more things, or make difficult decisions, we will,” the prime minister said.
Subsequently, Ms. Berejiklian was asked to confirm that the Greater Sydney area would not remain under lockdown before August.
The governor once again stated that the decision will be based on health advice and will depend on the actions of residents of Greater Sydney.
“I wish I had a crystal ball. I wish I knew where we would be in two weeks,” she said.
