On Sunday, a hot lava river stopped on the outskirts of Goma, saving the city in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo from disaster as the night eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano caused thousands of feared residents to flee panic.
An Agence France-Presse reporter said that when the black molten rock engulfed the house, it caused fire and smoke, which flowed to the Goma Airport on the shore of Lake Kivu, leaving smoldering wreckage behind.
Nonetheless, nine people were killed in an accident during the evacuation. Governor General Constant Ndima, appointed earlier this month, said that the province was under “siege” to counter violence by armed groups.
Due to the eruption of Africa’s most active volcano, many families slept on the sidewalk surrounded by their property and turned red under the night sky.
Pope Francis offered special prayers to Goma during the weekly Angelus prayer in the Vatican on Sunday, when the area felt about twelve tremors.
Marie Solange Kayisire, Minister of Emergency Management of Rwanda, said: “All Goma residents stayed overnight in the emergency shelters (mainly schools) established in Rwanda this morning without incident.”
Kayisire added: “Only about 100 of them remain in Rwanda, but they are people with cars and they stay overnight in hotels.”
A resident, Carine Mbala, told AFP: “It smells of sulfur. In the distance, you can see huge flames erupting from the mountains.”
The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Felix Tshisekedi, said he will shorten his European trip “to monitor the coordination of aid.”
It was officially confirmed that Mount Nilagongo was the first plane to depart from Goma before the eruption at 7:00 pm on Saturday, when red smoke drifted into the night sky.
As residents began to flee, most parts of the city were cut off.
Resident Richard Bahati (Richard Bahati) recalled the 2002 volcanic eruption.

In a report on May 10, the Goma Vulcanology Observatory warned of an increase in seismic activity around the volcano, one of the six volcanoes in the area.
Nyiragongo erupted on January 17, 2002, killing more than 100 people. The lava covered almost all areas of eastern Goma, including half of the airport landing runway.
The deadliest eruption of Nyiragongo was in 1977, which claimed more than 600 lives.
