Stuart McCarthy, a retired Army officer, told Sky News that he burned his medal in protest to show the government “how strong” the veterans’ feelings about obtaining permission to evacuate Afghan translators in danger from the Taliban.
Some veterans recently burned their military medals to protest the federal government’s efforts to provide safety for hundreds of Afghans employed by the Australian government.
Mr. McCarthy told Sky News host Paul Murray: “I wrote to Peter Dutton in May and proposed a plan. At the time, I saw what was happening in Afghanistan and the urgency of these events after the closure of our embassy. .”
“My suggestion to the minister is to conduct a very urgent military evacuation.”
Mr. McCarthy said that since he wrote to the government, he has not heard anything. He believes that burning the medal is his “last fight” to “get a certain meaning.”
“Show the government how strongly the veteran community feels about this.”
