After Australia defeated Germany by an advantage, it remained unbeaten in the billiards stage, making it a leader in historic medals.
Baby boomers are in charge of the business. Three victories in three pool games in Tokyo put Patty Mills’ team in the best position for the first Olympic medal in the history of the Australian men’s basketball team.
Even better, the baby boomers seem to get stronger every time they travel.
After a 89-76 victory over Germany on Saturday night, they defeated Italy in a less convincing way and had a fierce opener against Nigeria.
Patty Mills scored 24 points, and Jock Landale (18 points) and Nick Kay (16 points) provided strong support to ensure that the Australian team was placed at the top of Group B and won the coveted quarter-final draw D seats.
The exciting thing is that after the billiards game on August 1, the final eight will find their next opponent on August 2.
The three group champions plus the best second place will be placed in the D pool. The other two second places and the best two third places will be placed in the E pool.
Argentina defeated Japan 97-77 to advance, leaving only one billiard game: Spain vs. Slovenia.
At this stage, Australia, France, and the United States have guaranteed a place in the D file. The winner of the match between the undefeated Spain and Slovenia will join them.
File E will be the losers in Spain/Slovenia, Italy, Germany and Argentina.
In that potential group, Australia will seek to avoid either the old Spanish team that stole the bronze medal from us in Rio de Janeiro or the Slovenian team led by Luka Doncic from falling into D position.
Australian basketball superstar Andrew Bogut believes that the baby boomers will reach the semi-finals.
“We can play a role in our destiny, but we, France, the United States and Spain will be the (top) four, which I call now,” he told Channel 7.
“I think Luka Doncic and Slovenia are smoky. It is very exciting. I am proud of these children because they are part of the team and know what they are doing.”
