Infectious disease expert Professor Peter Collignon said that while the number of COVID cases in Sydney was “very concerning”, it was not “exponentially out of control”.
“These numbers are very worrying because they are around 100, and you can’t really take too much away every day because it can bounce up and down,” he told Sky News.
“But if we look at where the situation in Bondi East started, where the numbers are declining, it’s not that it’s out of control exponentially.
“So I don’t think everyone has to raise their hands in horror and say we have failed here.”
Professor Peter Collignon said that although the number of cases in the Fairfield area has increased, “hope that the situation will subside” and “then we will have to see what happens.”
“And just make sure that the existing rules that restrict movement, especially within the family, reduce opportunities there by preventing other groups from coming over-this should make a difference.”
