The number of COVID cases in New South Wales “is not moving in the right direction” to end the lockdown

New South Wales Governor Gladys Berejiklian said that the number of COVID cases in the state “is not moving in the right direction” and she will announce whether she will extend the lockdown period in Sydney after receiving health advice.

This happened after 77 new local infections and the death of a woman in her 90s were recorded in New South Wales.

“Well, obviously, the numbers are not moving in the right direction,” she said.

“The number we are most worried about is the number of people exposed in the community.

“Last night, we saw 33 people diagnosed with a certain degree of exposure in the community. This is the number we need to see as reduced to zero as possible.

“We are grateful to those who have been quarantined but subsequently contracted this disease, which is always unfortunate.

“But in terms of the larger public issues and challenges we face; those who have been in contact in the community are getting as close to zero as possible, because this tells us that there may still be an unknown chain of transmission.

“The whole purpose of the blockade is to stop people from moving and stop these chains of transmission.”
