In the early hours of Friday morning, dozens of Hong Kongers were waiting in line for an issue of the democratic newspaper Apple Daily, which had already been delivered to the newsstand. Many people bought several copies to show their support. On Thursday, more than 500 officials raided the newspaper’s newsroom, which the authorities said was triggered by articles that allegedly called for sanctions against China. For a long time, the newspaper and its imprisoned owner, Li Zhiying, have been a thorn in the eyes of Beijing. They unapologetically support the democratic movement in the financial center and severely criticize China’s authoritarian leaders.
The Hong Kong democratic faction “Apple Daily” boarded the stands on the second day after the police raided its newsroom. The newspaper was very large in print and printed a typical resistance message on the front: “We must move on.”
The company chose to print 500,000 copies-far exceeding its current daily circulation of approximately 80,000 copies-hoping that Hong Kongers can snap up the historical version.
