A group of elephants that have been traveling in China for 15 months stopped to rest on the edge of Kunming. Joshua Plotnik, an expert on cognition and behavior of Asian elephants, said that he did not know what caused the elephants to migrate 500 miles from their original home in Yunnan Province, calling the situation “very unprecedented.” “These elephants are not just to buy food, in fact, they have traveled hundreds of kilometers to find things,” Mr. Plotnik told Sky News. “This may be because they have lost the resources they are looking for and can no longer use them in their hometown.” He said that government officials, scientists and locals are working together to develop a plan to aid elephants. “The long-term solution is to find a way to either bring these elephants back to their homes or take them to another protected habitat where they can live safely.”
