Australian star racer Saya Sakakibara was carried off the track on a stretcher after a horrific crash in the Tokyo BMX semi-final.
Sakakibara was hit from behind in the third game of the second semi-final and was unable to stand up.
A few minutes after the American champion Connor Fields was taken to the hospital after an ugly crash, her crash happened.
Commentators on Channel 7 described the BMX scene as a “massage” and said that Sakakibara’s injuries were “tragic”-especially since her brother suffered terrible injuries in the sport last year.
In the terrible scene, Sakakibara was finally escorted off the track by a stretcher.
After the game, Sakihara said she was “very confused”.
“I’m really confused… Honestly, I don’t really know what happened, but I know I’m riding very well,” she said.
“My statistics are very good. I will come down with Alice [Willoughby] Whoever catches up with me, let’s come down together. This is all I remember.
“Yes, this is disappointing. I think I let everyone down, especially my brother.”
She said she was “cut off” by American driver Alice Willoughby in the crash, who was married to former Australian Olympian Sam Willoughby.
“Yes, unfortunately it was interrupted by Alise and fell down, yes, to be honest, I can’t believe it’s over,” she said. “It wasn’t until I watched that women’s game that I was really hit. Yes, it was really bad. I can’t believe it’s over.”
When everyone is waiting and hoping to get some good news, Australians have more reasons to feel sympathy for the Sakakibara family.
Her brother, Kai, turned 25 on Thursday, and he should be in Tokyo. He himself is a BMX superstar and is expected to win medals.
But early last year, he suffered a terrible accident that caused serious injuries. He was in a coma for two months, and for a while, the doctor was not sure whether he would survive.
Fortunately, he is a fighter. After eight months in the hospital, he started learning to walk and talk again, and he watched at home that his sister was eligible to participate in the semifinals on Friday.
Once it was determined that she was okay, Channel 7 passed through the home of Sakakibara home, where Kay gave his sister a beautiful message.
“Today was to complete the match we started yesterday, which is to advance to the finals, but unfortunately, Saya had very poor chips and this did not happen,” Kai said. “So it’s really annoying.
“But either way, I am proud of her. I can’t wait to see her play again.
“Saya, I know this is not what you want, but I’m proud anyway, let’s prepare for the next one.”
His sister said she did all this for him.
“I’m here for both of us,” Saya said Thursday. “I am now realizing the Olympic dream, and he has been with me on the journey.
“Under all the pressure from the Olympics, I really want to show him my best performance on his birthday. I think I can do it.”
Earlier, Fields was taken to the hospital after being taken off the track in the semifinals of the men’s BMX racing.
People saw Fields being loaded into the back of an ambulance near the track.
Fields was unable to complete the third round because he fell heavily in a disgusting facial first crash near the start of the first lap of the track.
Fields is the defending champion of the Olympic Games.
