Nearly 40 years have passed since one of his most memorable broadcast moments, and Sandy Roberts still did not live up to his Miss Australia gaffe.
It’s been 38 years, but when Sandy Roberts was asked about the moments he would rather forget, he didn’t hesitate.
The legend of Australian Sports Broadcasting can comment on the paint drying and still make people interested in his performance behind the microphone. Unfortunately, a resume with eight summer Olympics, three Winter Olympics, hundreds of AFL games, and a seamless transition in a range of other sports including golf, tennis, and racing will not be erased. Roberts joined Channel 7 after the 1980 Moscow Olympics and worked on Channel 7 for more than 30 years. He is hosting a report on the South Australia Mountain Gambier Cup.
Everything went well until the impromptu interaction with the 1981 Miss Australia champion Leanne Dick-as he explained in the latest episode of the sports host Mark Howard’s podcast Howie Games.
“You know what that is. I hope it will disappear, but it won’t. It’s 38 years old,” Roberts laughed after being asked by Howard’s daughter about his biggest live broadcast “thing”.
He went on to explain how each year Mount Gambier invites celebrity guests to participate in the biggest competition day on its calendar, usually the winner of a famous beauty pageant, and in 1983, this guest happened to be Dick.
Roberts pre-recorded an interview with her, and the interview went smoothly, and then faced the camera at the installation field around all the horses that were about to run.
The iconic TV star introduced his interview with Dick, which was broadcast, but just before the hurdles, things took a turn.
“When you host at an installation venue, it’s difficult because your lead may disappear at any time, or your microphone,” Roberts told Howard.
“Suddenly there was a little movement, and I noticed a veterinarian coming out. Anyway, a horse threw a plate, so they told us with my headset, and the director (said) “We will take a break and evaluate the situation.” There is no drama.
“We took a break, they were still mixing with the horse, and the producer said,’You go to the interview again and fill in the time.'”
Roberts looked around, but no one was nearby—except for Dick, he had already spoken to him. But there were only a few seconds left before returning to the air, and with no other choice, he had to go back to the second round.
“This is what I said:’Welcome back to the picturesque Glenburne Racecourse in Mount Gambier. Still with us is Miss Australia Leanne C**k… Uh, Dick’ At that time my life changed forever.
“It didn’t take long (the gaffe spread all over the world). The funniest home video in the U.S., the funniest home video in the U.K. (pick it up).”
Howard reminded Roberts of another classic joke in his decades of radio, which broke many people. When the news was released one night, he was a little confused when he told the audience that daylight saving time was about to start.
Roberts said at the time: “Before I say good night, don’t forget to turn the clock back one hour, before going to bed at night.” “In fact, don’t delay them by one hour, put them forward by one hour. This is what I think of daylight saving time confused.”
When talking to Howard about this matter, Roberts remembered that the floor manager communicated in time to solve the problem.
“You can see my eyes looking at him quickly—’Don’t go back, go forward!'” Roberts said.
