Health authorities in South Australia said they were unable to determine exactly how a man caught Covid-19 while in quarantine, but outlined a worrying “probable” cause.
South Australian health authorities claimed that “there is no single decisive cause” that caused a Victorian man to contract COVID-19 while isolating one of the hotels.
SA Health released its “Potential Moderate Hotel Transmission” report on Wednesday afternoon, which stated that there were no high-risk incidents or violations of preventive or control measures that could cause such transmission.
Instead, it found that airborne transmission was a “probable” cause, which was due to the timing of the opening and closing of doors between adjacent rooms.
The report said: “Checking the timing and location of food/items/waste/linens outside the guest room is likely to reduce the possibility of similar transmission incidents.”
“In addition, careful management and arranging of guests who are more likely to develop the risk of COVID-19 (for example, close contact) will also help.”
After returning to India from India on April 19, the Melbourne man was quarantined at the Playford Hotel in the Adelaide CBD.
However, four days after leaving SA and returning to Melbourne on May 4, he developed Covid-19 symptoms and tested positive for the virus.
Later genomic testing showed that it matched another infected man who was a guest of the same hotel in an adjacent room.
His infection has led to other local infections in the community, forcing the Victorian Health Service to implement restrictions in the Greater Melbourne area.
Other jurisdictions responded by restricting hotspots to limit travel and the spread of potential communities in their states and territories.
