As gasoline prices across the state soared, experts called on the Queensland government to intervene, and this situation is expected to continue.
Although fuel experts called on the government to introduce a cap, Queensland Governor Annastacia Palaszczuk denied responsibility for the state’s soaring gasoline prices.
At 80% of gas stations in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, motorists were fined 170 cents per liter for unleaded gasoline.
According to RACQ, the average daily lead-free price in Brisbane is 173.5 and that on the Gold Coast is 173.3, exceeding the record high since December 2019.
Geoff Trotter, general manager of FuelTrac’s gasoline price monitoring service, told ABC Radio Brisbane that motorists were “blackmailed” and the Queensland government should take action.
“If the government is serious, they can set a ceiling on these companies, and at no time will they exceed a certain level,” Mr. Trotter said.
“We will eliminate these gasoline price shocks that hit us every few weeks.”
However, Ms. Palaszczuk avoided the idea that the government could intervene.
She said Queensland’s current reporting plan-a service is also provided by the Queensland Government Australian Competition and Consumer Commission – Let consumers understand the price difference across the region.
“I am not responsible for pricing. The market sets this,” Ms. Palaszczuk said.
