A cold current has caused mercury to drop sharply in parts of Queensland, and there will be more nights close to freezing in the future.
As the mercury content in parts of the southwest is zero, the temperature is expected to be close to zero in the next few days, so the state of sunlight is definitely not the case.
The cold current is the result of a high-pressure system over “The Bight” in South Australia.
Weather Bureau forecaster Matt Marshall said that night temperatures will remain low before the wind changes, which may not be until Wednesday.
“It will be cold anywhere in the west,” he said.
“It is driven by The Bight’s high-pressure system and guides the southwest wind through South Australia and New South Wales and into Queensland.”
Although Brisbane survived the disaster, rural areas bear the brunt.
The lowest night temperature in Blackall, about 800 kilometers northwest of Brisbane, is 0.7C, compared to 1.7C in Rome and 1.9C in Lockington.
Stanthorpe is expected to drop to 1C overnight, while Warwick is expected to be 2C and Rome is 3C, but Brisbane and the Gold Coast will still survive, with the temperature dropping to only 10C.
Mr. Marshall said that the whole state will be cold until the middle of next week.
“Once the high pressure moves eastward, this will change the source of the wind in the next few days,” he said.
