NRL’s Beanie For Brain Cancer Round raised a staggering $4.1 million in its fifth round, which was held this weekend.
NRL raised a record $4.1 million for the Mark Hughes Foundation through this year’s Beanie For Brain Cancer Round.
Held in the 15th round of this season, the annual fundraising event encourages NRL fans to buy MHF beanies to wear during the game, and all proceeds will be used for brain cancer research.
By Sunday afternoon, the fifth iteration of the program had sold 160,000 beanies.
Incredibly, $1 million of the funds raised was donated by the newly formed McIlroy Family Foundation.
MHF founder Mark Hughes played 161 games for the Newcastle Cavaliers and was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2013. He said that the generosity of NRL fans made him “at a loss.”
“Every year the rugby league community digs deeply, but the result is truly incredible,” the two-time Premier League champion said in a statement released on Sunday.
“The 28 people who walked 150 kilometers from Sydney to Newcastle (to raise funds), the $1 million donated by the McIlroy Family Foundation, NRL and everyone who bought beanies and held large and small fundraising events—— Thank you!”
Although brain cancer kills more children than any other disease, and more people under the age of 40 than any other cancer, institutions that study this disease receive less than 5% of federal cancer research funding.
Hughes said the funds raised by the Beanie For Brain Cancer Round will help fund important research.
“With the funds raised in the past five years, we are now able to bring the world’s best brain cancer research and support team together in Newcastle, which helps us change the outcome of future diagnosis of patients. We are really humble and also Grateful.”
NRL CEO Andrew Abdo said that the total amount of funds raised exceeded the Mark Hughes Foundation’s goal of more than $1 million and was a “model” of the “rugby league community strength.”
“I often say that the Rugby League brings people together, and the Beanie For Brain Cancer Round is a good example,” Abdo said.
“For our clubs, players, broadcasters and most of our fans, they have expressed their support and purchased beanies-we should all be extremely proud of our collective ability to unite for a common cause.
“I especially want to thank Mark Hughes. He is a champion player on the court and has overcome adversity to become a community leader off the court. His continued leadership of the Mark Hughes Foundation will have a lasting impact on so many people.”
