Mavis Phillips nee Walley is one of Australia’s earliest well-known Aboriginal photographers. She grew up in Gumaling in rural Western Australia and started shooting with a simple cardboard camera called box Brownie in the 1930s. The images in the series share the happiest time of her life, when her family lived and worked on a farm owned by a white family, unaffected by indigenous welfare. But they were then transferred to the native eeserve of Gumarin, where they were bound by the apartheid laws of Western Australia.
