A Melbourne couple triggered a Covid panic in Queensland after lifting the blockade and heading to the Sunshine Coast.
According to reports, the couple spent a few days in a remote area of New South Wales and then moved north to Queensland on June 5. A 44-year-old woman tested positive in Caloundra on June 8.
Queensland still regards Melbourne as a hotspot for the new crown epidemic, and travelers from southern state capitals must complete hotel quarantine upon arrival.
After announcing a strict lockdown, the woman and her husband left Victoria on June 1.
Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the woman entered Queensland on June 5, passing through Goondiwindi and Toowoomba.
She lives in Caloundra with her family, including her husband, who has so far tested negative.
“This woman was tested yesterday and it was confirmed today that this is a positive case,” Ms. Das said.
Queensland’s Chief Health Officer, Dr. Janet Young, remained calm and did not criticize the couple for leaving Victoria during the lockdown.
She said that in three days, there were more than six exposed websites, including a McDonald’s in Goondiwindi, a service station in Toowoomba, and the women’s area of Kmart in Caloundra.
“I don’t know the details or why they left,” Dr. Yang said.
“Of course, we will investigate how this happened.”
She said that the contact tracker has so far identified six close contacts. Although her husband did not test positive, he is being monitored at Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
Dr. Young said that the woman developed symptoms on June 3 and expressed sympathy for the Queenslanders for the positive case.
“She has been walking around since June 5th,” she said.
“Any COVID case is frustrating.
“For 18 months, the community now has to endure so much, and to do so again, regardless of the cause, COVID cases in any community will frustrate many people.”
Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski said that the couple’s whereabouts will be checked and asked why they went to Queensland when Victoria was declared a hotspot.
He said that at the same time, they are most concerned about tracking contracts and determining who has been exposed to the virus.
“Of course, we will investigate the circumstances of what happened here,” Commissioner Gollschewski said.
“When Victoria was in lockdown, we had a couple from Victoria.
“All aspects of this happening, including what happened in other states, will be carried out in cooperation with our colleagues in Victoria, New South Wales.
“We will check all the questions about the passes, whether they are appropriate and what happened-it is too early to say.
“The whole purpose of our investigation will be to establish the facts.”
