Melbourne City Council pays tribute to “wrong” traditional landowners at NAIDOC week

Stonnington City Councillor Alexander Lew stated that his city council paid tribute to the “wrong” traditional landowners during the NAIDOC week celebrations because they did not want to “offend” the communities they had booked.

“The Victorian Indigenous Heritage Committee recently made a decision to resolve the dispute over who the traditional owners of Stonnington are,” he said.

“And our committee has continued to organize the wrong traditional owners to organize events for NAIDOC Week. Unfortunately, not wanting to offend them, we did not cancel them.

“So we continue to conduct NAIDOC Week activities with traditional owners who have not been properly recognized, and although we will use the correct traditional owners, we continue to move forward.”

Mr. Lew told Sky News Australia that he believes the celebration will continue and admits the wrong landowner because many of his colleagues are not “so focused on indigenous issues”.

“I think this is what they use to promote their image,” he said.

“But if you only scratch the surface, I don’t believe that I don’t care or worry that much about the real issues affecting the indigenous peoples of the Stonnington Council.”
