Jarryd Hayne: Former NRL star appeals conviction for sexual assault

In September 2018, a jury found that the 33-year-old woman was guilty of two crimes of sexual assault against a woman at her home in Newcastle. Last month, he was sentenced to five years and nine months in prison by District Court Judge Helen Syme .

Hein’s lawyer, Penny Musgrave, told the Supreme Court on Thursday morning that Hein would appeal his conviction.

The matter is scheduled for a three-hour hearing in the Court of Appeal on November 29.

The court learned that Hein will watch the proceedings at the Kumar Correctional Center through an audio-visual link.

After the jury found him guilty in March, Hein expressed his intention to appeal his conviction.

“I will definitely appeal,” he said shortly after the jury made its decision.

He added: “I would rather go to jail knowing what I’m telling the truth than being a free man living in lies.”

During the sentencing of the Newcastle District Court in May, Hein continued to claim that he was innocent and had consensual sex with the woman.

“I didn’t do this,” he told Judge Syme.

A female supporter in the public gallery shouted “You are innocent” when sentenced.

Hayne’s first trial in Newcastle last year ended with a jury pending, but he was found guilty after a second trial in Sydney Downing Centre District Court earlier this year.

He pleaded not guilty, but the jury accepted the evidence from the 26-year-old woman at the time. She said she disagreed with Hain performing oral sex and digital sex on her in her bedroom on the final night of the NRL Grand.

She had two lacerations in her vagina and she was bleeding.

Hein insisted that her injury was an accident and apologized.

In her testimony, the woman said that she refused to agree to have sex because the former Parramatta defender-she was attending a two-day party in Newcastle-had a taxi waiting outside.
