A man allegedly carried out a car theft during the lockdown, deliberately causing his taxi to collide and another driver was seriously injured.

An alleged car thief caused traffic chaos in East Perth. The police said he was the one who caused the crash of his taxi.

They said that just after 9 o’clock on Friday morning, the taxi was driving on Guildford Road-the city was under lockdown-when the man grabbed the steering wheel and caused the vehicle to hit a tree.

He allegedly subsequently fled to James Street, where he ran onto the road and was hit by a Nissan X-Trail, which he stole after the driver got out of the car and tried to help him.

Police said that about seven minutes later, the SUV collided with a Honda CRV at the intersection of Guildford Road and Collier Road, but then left the scene.

Allegedly, the man then drove into the Central Business District, drove on the wrong road and crashed into a Hyundai i30.

According to police, the man was involved in another car accident less than half an hour later and collided with a Mitsubishi ASX at the intersection of East Parade and Graham Farmer Freeway ramp.

The man who drove that car was in his 60s and was seriously injured and needed surgery.

The alleged perpetrator tried to escape the scene but was caught by the police and was taken to the Royal Perth Hospital for treatment for minor injuries. He was later charged with a series of crimes, including dangerous driving causing serious bodily injury, and two counts of assault on public officials.

He will appear in Perth Magistrates Court on Saturday.
