The Hong Kong police arrested the editor-in-chief and four directors of the “Apple Daily”, which is the latest attack on the imprisoned boss Lai Zhiming in a national security crackdown in Beijing.
According to the national security department of the police, five directors of a company were arrested on suspicion of colluding with foreign countries or endangering national security by external factors. The newspaper’s office was also searched.
According to the Apple Daily, about 100 police officers arrived at the newspaper’s headquarters at around 7:30 on Thursday morning and sealed off the area.
The newspaper stated that five directors were arrested in the morning raid, including editor-in-chief Ryan Law; chief executive officer Zhang Jinxiong; chief operating officer Zhou Daquan; deputy editor-in-chief Chen Peiman; and editor-in-chief Zhang Zhiwei.
The police only stated that the five people included four men and one woman, aged between 47 and 63. No other details were provided.
This move is the latest blow to Apple Daily, after the authorities froze the shares in the newspaper’s publisher Next Digital in May.
Lai was arrested in August 2020 and later charged under the National Security Law enforced by Beijing. According to the same law, the assets of the democracy activist were frozen.
He has been in jail Since being denied bail in another national security trial in December last year. Under the new law, he faces three charges, including collusion with foreign countries.
