Funding for those who only “definitely” “cannot close the gap” for indigenous people: price

Jacinta Price, deputy mayor of Alice Springs, said that the most marginalized Aboriginal Australians remain in remote areas and therefore need to provide funding and support for them—not those who are merely “identified as Aboriginals”.

“Marginalized Aboriginal Australians are people from remote areas,” she told Sky News.

“Those who live in cities and have access to services, better educational outcomes and employment outcomes-they are actually doing very well.

“We need to be realistic about how we support marginalized Australians and Indigenous Australians, and the need to provide funding, support and services where they exist.

“I think we need to abandon the overall aboriginal identity and transfer all funds and services based solely on the aboriginal identity-obviously this is not trying to close the gap.”
