Greg Inglis’s Premier League career has been shortened, and it is reported that the 34-year-old player has cancelled his contract with Warrington.
Due to a hamstring injury, the rugby league comeback of former Rabbitohs and Storm star Greg Inglis was shortened.
Inglis left NRL in 2019 and has been playing for the Warrington Wolves in the Super League.
The 2014 Premier League champion was injured in a game against Huddersfield in May, his third game for the club.
Late Friday night (Australian Eastern Standard Time), Warrington announced the injury that prompted the club to cancel Inglis’ remaining contract.
The Wolves wrote in a statement: “After friendly discussions, the parties reached a mutual agreement to terminate Greg’s game contract.”
Inglis said: “Unfortunately, things have developed to this point, but the injury is more serious than we originally thought.”
“Not many people have the opportunity and experience to play in the Premier League in the UK, especially at my age. I want to thank Warrington for giving me this opportunity.
“I only have high praise for the club. They have always been very good to me and my partner and made us feel at home from the beginning. Not only the team, but also the organization, they have done a lot for us.”
Inglis will stay in the UK temporarily, where he will assume a voluntary mentoring role in Warrington.
According to the club’s statement, he will assist the Wolves’ performance and academy programs aimed at nurturing young rugby league talent.
“I said from the beginning that I wanted to add value to this club, and this is what I still focus on firmly,” Inglis said.
Warrington Chief Executive Carl Fitzpatrick admitted that he was disappointed not to see GI’s performance in more than three games, but said he was looking forward to working with the 34-year-old player off the court.
Fitzpatrick said: “Although we would like to see Greg put more into action, he has brought great value to our organization with his leadership and pushing for club standards.”
“This proves his character. He hopes to stay in Warrington until the end of the season, continue to support the team and guide some of our young players.”
Inglis tried to score twice in three games with Warrington. In the final victory over Castleford in a Challenge Cup qualifier, he once played at the full-back position.
