The second-half counterattack planned by Matt Burton was not enough to allow the exhausted Panthers to win victory from the Sharks on Friday.
In the 79th minute, the unpopular central defender Shaun Johnson’s field goal allowed Cronulla to beat the exhausted Penrith 19-18.
The Sharks appeared to lead 18-0 on Friday night, when the Panthers, inspired by Matt Burton, tried to roar in three consecutive games in the second half.
But Johnson, who may be looking for a new club, locked the winner of the game 35 meters away, thus locking in an exciting victory.
It injected new energy into Cronulla’s season, and when guard Josh Hanner succeeded John Morris three weeks ago and lost his first five games, the season looked dead.
However, after determining the new half-time combination of Johnson and the reborn Matt Moylan, the Sharks are now in their best form of the year and are about to enter the top eight.
This is a brave counterattack from the Panthers. They do not have the five origins of Nathan Cleary, Jarom Luai, Brian To’o, Isa Young and Kurt Capwell. star.
Burton carefully planned his comeback through two attempts, but in the end coach Ivan Cleary may regret his decision to let his big-name team rest.
The ladder leader has now fallen twice in a row for the first time since August 2019, and may lose to Melbourne at the end of the round.
Moylan Sprint
When Moylan was appointed next season’s new coach Craig Fitzibbon to recruit Nicho Hynes’s partner at halftime, many people were surprised.
But Moylan showed why he was nodded.
The former Blues star felt his presence early in the game against his old club, sending Ronaldo Mulitalo into the backcourt with a sharp cut on their own 20-meter line.
The test was when Mulitalola entered the defender and found his support for five-eighths. He stretched his sly hamstrings by defeating three chasers in a 55-meter sprint.
“Crossing 55 meters will give him confidence,” former Cronulla captain Paul Gallen said on Channel 9.
This undoubtedly gave his teammates enough confidence, because they took full advantage of the anachronistic Penrith and took the lead in three games at halftime.
Moylan was followed closely by Johnson following the air catch of Englishman Nikola and ended the half with Mulitalo’s acrobatics.
However, no matter what Cleary said in the shed, it did a miracle for his team. He placed the home team on the ropes of the Netstrata Jubilee Stadium for most of the second period.
They crossed the line three times but were rejected, and then Burton finally stopped the ball with his left foot in the 58th minute and recorded the visiting team on the scoreboard.
A rookie forward Izack Tago who tried to be impressive and the other set the stands for Burton to finish, only allowing Johnson to step up on the clutch.
