The Democratic governor is facing protests, lawsuits, and impeachment petitions for his administrative actions related to the virus. He expressed frustration that the mask requirement to slow the spread of the virus has become a “freedom issue”.
“When you saw our response, I think you saw a success story, which is obviously based on a comparison of what might happen,” the governor said.
According to data from the Johns Hopkins University Systems Science and Engineering Center, there have been 7,138 Covid-19-related deaths in Kentucky so far. The death toll ranks 27th in the country and 32nd per capita, with 159.7 deaths per 100,000 people.
Bashir said that hospitals in the state have never been crowded with virus patients, and the launch of the vaccination was “quite successful.” More than 2 million Kentucky people were vaccinated.
“I’m the kind of person who has to try to lower his head to sleep every night, knowing that we have lost Kentucky, knowing the sadness outside, and the fact that many people can’t say goodbye and stay by the bed,” he said. “We let thousands of Kentucky people die alone, or have nurses holding their hands to die. So from this perspective, every day, I don’t see any of these in any red or blue discussions. Neither should other parts of the country.”
Bashir has faced constant criticism and occasional protests for his actions. Last year, armed protesters gathered near the governor’s house and then hanged a statue of Beshear from a tree near the state capitol. The event was promoted as a rally to defend constitutional rights, including the right to bear arms, but later turned into a protest against the governor’s virus restrictions.
