China on Tuesday reported the highest daily record of newly confirmed Covid cases since January due to a surge in imported infections in the southwestern Yunnan Province bordering Myanmar.
Reuters: The National Health Commission said in a statement that there were 65 new confirmed cases in mainland China on July 19, compared with 31 a day ago. This is the most since January 30, when 92 new cases were reported.
Among the new cases reported on July 19, imported infections accounted for the majority. Yunnan reported 41 new cases from abroad, all of which were Chinese citizens who had recently returned from Myanmar.
The current round of cases in Yunnan began on July 4 and is concentrated in Ruili and Longchuan, two small cities on the border between China and Myanmar. The number of infections has risen sharply since June.

According to the Associated Press, a study by the US-based Global Development Center found that 4 million people died in India from the beginning of the pandemic to June 21.
According to tracking data from Johns Hopkins University, although not all deaths can be directly attributed to the new coronavirus, the country’s official coronavirus death toll is 414,108, almost ten times the country’s official death toll.
The report released on Tuesday estimated that between January 2020 and June 2021, the number of excess deaths (the gap between the recorded number and the expected number) will be between 3 million and 4.7 million. It said that the exact number may be “elusive”, but the true number of deaths “may be an order of magnitude larger than the official statistics.”
Arvind Subramanian, the former chief economic adviser of India and one of the authors of the study, said that it is difficult to determine the actual number of Covid deaths, but he added:
The real death toll may be millions instead of hundreds of thousands. This is arguably India’s worst human tragedy since its division and independence.
