Four of the cases were localized infections in the eastern province of Anhui, all related to the same case, with the surname Li. State media reported that large-scale tests are being conducted in Lu’an and Hefei, two cities in the province.
The National Health Commission reported two cases in Anhui Province on Friday, which were recorded on Thursday.
This is the first local transmission since April 20, when China recorded two transmissions in the southwestern province of Yunnan, and a city bordering Myanmar reported a new transmission group in late March.
China’s official Xinhua News Agency said Li Zhaoxing left for Anhui on May 1 from Dalian, a port city in Liaoning Province.
According to Xinhua News Agency, another case of the National Health Commission surnamed Zhang was in close contact with Li Shi during a training class led by Li Shi.
The Anhui authorities subsequently reported two other cases that were spread locally, both of which were linked to Li. Xinhua News Agency quoted local health officials as saying that none of the confirmed cases in Anhui had been vaccinated.
In response to these cases, two areas in Luan County and a part of Feixi County were declared “moderately dangerous.”
At the same time, the health department of Liaoning Province reported three new infections in three other port cities, Yingkou City, including two local infections.
The other five cases in mainland China recorded on Thursday and reported on Friday were imported infections originating from overseas. The Health Commission reported 9 cases on Thursday, all of which were imported.
As of Thursday, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in mainland China is 90,815, and the death toll is still 4,636.
