The world’s fourth most populous country is battling one of Asia’s worst coronavirus outbreaks, with 27,913 infections yesterday becoming the latest of many peaks in the past two weeks.
In a statement, Sardjito Hospital in Java said that from yesterday to earlier today, when fresh supplies arrived, 63 patients died after almost depleting oxygen. However, a hospital spokesperson could not confirm whether all the dead were infected with the coronavirus.
Ministry of Health official Siti Nadia Tarmizi said that in response, the government asked the natural gas industry to increase the production of medical oxygen.
“We also hope that people don’t stock up on oxygen,” she added, referring to the stockpiles that may prevent many people from getting oxygen.
The hospital said it had been seeking more oxygen supplies in the days before the incident, but the influx of virus patients since Friday has exceeded its capacity and consumed the supply faster than expected. When it began to receive more supplies before dawn today, the crisis was eased.
In addition, the department responsible for overseeing the Covid response in Indonesia ordered the natural gas industry to give priority to production to meet the estimated demand of 800 tons of oxygen per day for medical needs. The department added that there are 225,000 tons of idle capacity in the industry that can still be used each year.
Due to the spread of the highly contagious delta variant, the hospital on the main island of Java is on the verge of extinction.
In Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, the government stated that the number of daily funerals following the Covid protocol has increased tenfold since the beginning of May, and 392 people were buried yesterday. This is also the 18-day “emergency” restriction measures implemented by Java and Bali to control the spread of the virus.
The ministry said that starting from Tuesday, Indonesia will restrict the entry of foreign tourists and only allow those who are fully vaccinated and have a negative PCR test to enter, except for diplomatic travel.
Tourists still need to be quarantined for eight days after arrival.
