Now, coffee-loving Melburnians are allowed to bring reusable cups into their favorite cafes, but you have to follow some simple rules.
During the COVID lockdown, Melbourne cafes banned the use of reusable cups, thus stopping environmental protection.
The Ministry of Health outlines its takeaway practices Coronavirus website These include clean cups and “non-contact pouring.”
Juliet Coffee and Bakery Barista Gwen Lee said that customers are still confused whether they can use their own cups.
She said: “Due to COVID, people are currently confused. We usually pour boiling water into the thermos in advance. This will keep the coffee warm and help keep the cup clean.”
“During COVID, we temporarily stopped using the reusable cup, but when the mask fell off, it started to use it again. The surrounding rules are confusing.”
Companies are allowed to accept reusable cups as takeaway drinks, but they do not accept any dirty cups, so employees can develop good hygiene habits.
Cafes are allowed to use a “non-contact pour” technique, where the owner of a reusable cup puts it on the counter for the barista to pour the drink.
How to use “non-contact pouring” technology
1. Ask if your cafe can do non-contact pouring
2. Put the reusable cup on the counter or tray with the lid not opened
3. The barista pours the drink into another container and then pours it into your cup without touching it
4. Put the lid on the reusable cup
