The banned former NRL star Ben Barba made a strange appearance in front of thousands of fans before the AFL game on Saturday.
The disgraced NRL star Ben Barba will participate in the curtain-raising game before clashing with Adelaide in St Kilda, Cairns on Saturday.
The 32-year-old player has been playing local Australian rules football in North Queensland and was selected earlier this month for the Saints and Ravens’ representative game before the Cazalys Stadium.
Barba was selected to represent the North Queensland AFL District in the annual match with South Queensland.
The former Dally M player was suspended for life by the NRL for allegedly using violence against his partner Ainslie Currie.
She made no charges.
After watching CCTV footage of the incident outside the casino, NRL gave the father of four a lifelong ban.
Police said Barba threw stones at Curry, who was the mother of their four children.
This incident caused the Cowboys to tear up Barba’s contract, which was reportedly worth $300,000 for the 2019 season. NRL subsequently cancelled his registration and prohibited any rival clubs from attempting to sign the speeder.
He has been trying to clean up his once brilliant career since he pleaded guilty to assault and causing bodily harm after an argument with his brother-in-law last year.
According to reports, in April, Barba became the focus of football league teams in the emerging North American Football League game, which may allow him to return to professional sports.
Barba started playing football in 2019 and then took part in his third sport within 12 months, when he switched to a local AFL game.
Aaron David, the great North Queensland team coach of the Melbourne Devils, said that although Barba has a terrible past, his teammates are happy to be teammates with him.
“I personally know Benny, and having him is great for the community,” David said.
“But having said that, he has done what he did at the highest level of NRL, and [under] Unfortunately, he is playing with a different code.
“But his performance is great. I think our kids let him play more than I coached him, so it’s a blessing.”
In February 2019, he was fired by the North Queensland Cowboys without participating in the game.
Barba made 99 attempts during his 9-year tenure in the NRL and won the Premier League title with the Cronulla Sharks in 2016.
