New research reveals the areas where your car is most likely to be stolen.

Compare sites discoverer Said that ACT’s car theft rate is the highest of any state or territory.

Finder analyzed data from the US Commission to Reduce Auto Theft to determine the state and local government regions with the highest rates of auto theft.

ACT recorded 254 thefts per 100,000 residents.

Queensland followed closely with more than 12,000 thefts in the 12 months to March this year. This is equivalent to 242 incidents per 100,000.

It is closely followed by the Northern Territory, with 239 thefts per 100,000 residents, Western Australia (198) and Victoria (196).

The total number of car thefts in Victoria is the highest of any state or territory, at 12,648.

The third lowest were Tasmania (181 cases), South Australia (151 cases) and New South Wales, with only 132 thefts per 100,000 residents.

New South Wales is the most populous state in the country, and the total number of thefts is about 2,000 less than in Victoria or Queensland.

The data also shows two major differences between New South Wales and Victoria.

In Victoria, the most common area for car theft is Melbourne. Three local government jurisdictions, Yarra, Maribyrnong, and Port Phillip, performed the worst.

The remote areas of New South Wales are hot spots. Cessnock in the Hunter Region, Coonamble in the Midwest and Wentworth near the Victorian border are the worst three.

The most common stolen car is the Holden Commodore VE, with 884 reported stolen, Toyota HiLux (516) and Ford Ranger (448) utes.

For many years, HiLux and Ranger have been the two most popular models in the country.

In total, more than 45,000 cars have been reported stolen, a 24% decrease from previous years.

Taylor Blackburn, an insurance expert at Finder, said that having comprehensive car insurance is the best way to prevent car theft.

“Your car is one of the most valuable assets you have,” Blackburn said. “In the event of theft, car insurance will become your financial lifeboat, but you need to adopt a third-party fire and theft or comprehensive policy to protect it.”
