AFL News 2021: Dave Hughes, Covid rules are chaotic, AFL club relocates to Queensland

Comedian Dave Hughes was furious with the AFL’s decision to flee to Queensland, despite their exposure to the virus.

Australian comedian Dave Hughes pointed out hypocrisy/chaos and the decision to allow AFL players to fly to Queensland during the growing Covid-19 outbreak in Melbourne.

Earlier this week, the AFL season was in chaos. As Melbourne entered the fifth strict lockdown, several AFL clubs fled Melbourne for the Sunshine State.

It was confirmed on Saturday that at least one player or staff member from Essendon, North Melbourne and Sydney was under strict isolation after visiting a “level 1” location in Victoria before leaving the state.

However, to the AFL’s relief, the players and staff of the eight clubs who have traveled to the exposed locations in Victoria in recent days have tested negative for Covid-19.

Hughes vented on social media his frustration with the fact that the AFL club in Melbourne exposed to the virus has flown to another state, putting the community at risk.

“Why did the swans board a plane from Melbourne to Queensland after the outbreak in Melbourne?” he wrote on Twitter.

“This is crazy.”

Hughes added: “It is incredible to let all these teams leave Melbourne for the game, instead of letting them play in Melbourne when it is already obvious that the players/staff have been exposed.”

After Saturday’s game against the Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium, the 50-year-old was dissatisfied with the sight of Western Bulldogs players interacting with the audience.

“I know I’m playing the piano, but I’m just watching the Western Bulldog players interact with the crowd during the Gold Coast game,” Hughes said.

“I don’t understand. Is the border closed? QLD Is there no agreement for the new Victorians? Really confused? @AFL”

Hughes apparently disagrees with the decision to relocate the AFL club from Queensland from Melbourne in the foreseeable future, although he does not know whether the players and staff have been exposed.

Hughes was asked by his followers, including former Port Adelaide player-born authoritative expert Kane Cornes, whether he would rather not continue the AFL season.

“Are you also upset about Olympic players, cricket players going to the West Indies, and tennis players going to Wimbledon?” Cones asked Hughes.

Hughes shot back: “Kane, they will go to the hot spot of the new crown epidemic. If they infect people there, these countries will not be shut down.”

“You are more suitable for arguing than this!”
