An Australian gold medal defending star has withdrawn from the Tokyo Olympics, acknowledging that the uncertainty of Covid-19 played a key role.
The Australian women’s sevens rugby star Emilee Cherry, called the “goat” by teammates, made the shocking decision to suspend her career and withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics.
The 28-year-old’s intention is to climb to the top in Tokyo and help defend the gold medal Australia won in Rio four years ago.
But Cheri said that her pregnancy and the uncertainty of Covid-19 convinced her to retire – just 56 days before the start of the Olympics on July 23.
Cherry is known for her calm mind and field vision. After giving birth to her daughter Alice with her husband Dan in June 2019, she was forced to return to the national team.
Both mentally and physically, Cherry had planned the Tokyo Olympics to be the last time she wore an Australian jersey to participate in the competition, but the 12-month delay was really too much trouble.
“My body tells me that I’ve had enough. The schedule for the COVID-19 pandemic has changed so much. At the same time, Alice and childcare services and Dan’s schedule have to be taken into consideration… We decided to take a step back and play a supporting role in Tokyo. ,” Cherry said.
Australian coach John Manetti said: “Emilee has given so many teams, programs and jerseys, it is sad to see her go.”
“The timing of her departure is unfortunate, because I know that the whole team is happy to give her the farewell she deserves, but I know that this will not affect the team’s entry into the Olympics.
“On behalf of the entire seven-a-side rugby event, I thank Em for everything he has given and will continue to give.”
Cherry added: “I was very emotional about this decision, and some girls tried to persuade me not to do it.”
“I think some other people think this is a joke and I will still come back to play. But now I feel relieved and I feel lucky to have had an amazing 10 years with this team.”
The 2014 World Sevens Rugby Player of the Year, so nicknamed “Goat” (the greatest ever) is still working on preparing the Tokyo team, helping with analysis and skills.
Although other teammates are more well-known, Cherry is a generation player, and the Australian team will miss her foresight and pressure.
However, although the delay is too burdensome for Cherry, the superstar center said that the delay will put her teammates in a good position.
Twelve months ago, the gold medal may be out of reach of the team, but this is not the case now.
“The delay will help the girls. They have an extra 12 months, during which time they have improved their speed, stamina and strength,” Cherry said.
“Before the Olympics, we have another Oceania vs. New Zealand series. I think we are better prepared than the rest of the world.
“This team can win the Olympic gold medal and become the best team in the world.”
