According to Dmitry Ozerkov, head of the Contemporary Art Department of the National Hermitage Museum, in the end, all museums will build their digital copies in the meta universe.
Ozerkov is currently developing “Celestial Hermitage”, which is a digital version of the iconic Russian museum that will showcase NFT art.
“We are all entering the digital age, and our digital twin will follow us everywhere,” Ozerkov told Cointelegraph in an exclusive interview.
The State Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia is the largest art gallery in the world, with approximately 3 million works of art.
In September 2021, the museum took the first step in the NFT world by selling 5 digital copies of its most famous masterpiece in the form of NFT, raising nearly US$450,000.
In November, the Hermitage launched the first fully digital exhibition called “The Ethereal Aether”, which showcased 38 NFTs in the museum’s digital reconstruction.
Unlike the physical Winter Palace where visitors can only watch the exhibited works, the virtual exhibition allows visitors to interact with the NFT on display.
“You can walk through these doors without touching anything, and in the virtual world, you can do anything: you can play with artworks, you can make them interact, and you can add data to them,” Ozerkov explained Say.
The exhibition can be viewed online for free until December 10.
As Ozerkov pointed out, the Hermitage’s interest in NFT goes beyond market dynamics and seeks to study the artistic value that NFT can bring to the contemporary art world.
“My idea is to select some existing works from the market, put them in the museum, and see: What is left in them as art? Is there any art there or do we like, what we value is only money?”.
