In a new Paper Published by Microsoft Research, with the participation of researchers from Alibaba and Carnegie Mellon University, the Redmond-based software giant has studied a blockchain-based incentive system to support anti-piracy Activity.

“We think this is a distributed system problem,” the paper said. “During the implementation, we have overcome a series of unavoidable obstacles to ensure safety, albeit completely transparent.”
Argus can use the corresponding watermark algorithm detailed in the paper to trace the pirated content back to the source. Also known as “leak proof”, every report of leaked content involves an information hiding program. In this way, no one other than the whistleblower can report the same watermarked copy without actually owning it.
The system also has protective measures to reduce incentives to prevent informants from reporting the same leaked content over and over again under different aliases. “With the security and practicality of Argus, we hope that by turning to a completely transparent incentive mechanism, real-world anti-piracy activities will be truly effective,” the report said.
The paper detailed the issue of Ethereum network fees and explained that the team optimized a number of encryption operations, “in order to reduce the cost of piracy reports to the equivalent of sending approximately 14 ETH transfer transactions to run on the public Ethereum network. The cost of this would otherwise correspond to thousands of transactions.”
