With the proliferation of fake Covid passports online, Australia has introduced a blockchain-based vaccine registry, which has made experts even more nervous.
As fake Australian coronavirus vaccination certificates are currently circulating on the Internet, local consultants are working to launch a blockchain-based vaccine passport across the country to ensure the validity of the country’s “Covid Certificate” system.
An internal Australian report cited fraudsters as saying that WHO claimed to have sold nearly 200 copies of COVID-19 certificates for $120 or more and gained interest from at least 900 potential substitute customers. Fraudsters promote their products in order to convince “you will be the only person who knows that you have not been vaccinated” and claim that they will organize doctors to enter false vaccination records into Australia’s immunization register.
Although the fraudster is not a competitor, another disgraceful Covid certificate marketer claims to have established partnerships with doctors in Australia, Europe, the United States and some parts of Asia to produce false vaccination records internationally.
Other sellers claim to provide cheaper solutions to bypass health rules, claiming to sell tampered vaccination records directly from the Apple App Store for $12.99.
According to Robert Potter of Internet 2.0, a cyber security company, Australia should use blockchain technology to ensure that its Covid certification system is not compromised. He urged every Australian and international authority to adopt a blockchain-based “non-replicable language signature authority”:
“We can think of a foolproof system that we can only use, but we do need a world system that everyone can use,” he said. “This will be the cryptographic equivalent of the hologram.”
Blockchain has been used to verify the status of Covid vaccines worldwide, and the technology is currently being explored in the United States, China, South Korea, and South American countries. World technology group IBM has developed a blockchain-driven system integrated with Amadeus-an airline reservation system used by more than 450 airlines worldwide.
Australia’s Blockchain Vice Chairman Tibet Berman Cohen believes that blockchain-based Covid certificates may pave the way for the safe sharing of health knowledge on a global scale. He said: “As a global and safe way to share health knowledge, This will be an excellent legal action.”
However, not everyone agrees that Australia needs a blockchain-based vaccination system. Helix Jongen, the head of the Australian Department of Services, stated that the current Covid certificate application provided by his organization contains “enhanced anti-fraud options.”
“The creation of any disgraceful COVID-19 digital certificate does not mean that our systems or personal data have been compromised,” Jongen said. “Where are the differences […] The Australian Department of Services can contact the supplier to ensure the accuracy of this information and record it correctly when needed. “
