New research from Australian Automobile Association (AAA) Data shows that transportation costs play a big role in the family budget, because Australians now pay an average of $44 more per week than at the beginning of the year.
AAA head Michael Bradley (Michael Bradley) said that since the beginning of 2021, costs have risen sharply and more work needs to be done to ease the pressure on the family.
Mr. Bradley said: “The sharp increase in transportation costs needs to be monitored by the government, and the government needs to avoid policies and decisions that affect the cost of living.”
“Transportation affordability needs to continue to be a government priority because Australia has not only recorded the largest increase in transportation costs since the start of the Affordability Index, but households are now paying the highest percentage of their income for these costs.”
Sydney is the capital city with the most expensive transportation costs, with residents paying A$461.57 per week, or more than A$24,000 per year.
This includes the repayment of car loans, tolls, fuel, public transportation, insurance, registration, services, and roadside assistance.
The second most expensive transportation city is Melbourne, with a price of A$434. Followed by Brisbane ($428), Perth ($377), Canberra ($368), Adelaide ($355), Darwin ($342), Hobart is the cheapest at $335. The national average is $354 per week.
For Hobart drivers, this is not good news. Although weekly expenses are the smallest of all capital cities, they account for the largest proportion of household income in all capital cities, at 17.6%.
Residents of Brisbane are the next worst place, followed by locals in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Darwin and Canberra, who pay the smallest proportion of transportation expenses.
