The disaster hit one of Italy’s most popular tourist attractions, the cable car plummeted and at least 12 passengers were killed.
A cable car fell on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy, killing at least 12 people and injuring two children.
The accident happened on Sunday Stresa-Alpino Mottarone cable car, To transport passengers from the resort town of Stresa to the nearby top of Mottarone. It is mainly used by tourists.
The trip up the mountain takes 20 minutes and ends at an altitude of about 1400 meters. According to the Italian Alpine Rescue Agency, the car was 100 meters away from the top of the mountain when it fell and crashed into a forest area.
The rescue service issued an alarm at around 12:30 pm local time.
Officials initially stated that 11 people were on board at the time of the accident and 9 of them were killed, but these figures were later revised. The current death toll is 12, and it is not clear how many passengers there are.
Two children, 9 and 5 years old, were seriously injured and transported by helicopter to a pediatric hospital in Turin.
The photos at the scene showed that the car was lying in a clearing.
The cable has been around since 1970, although it was reopened after it was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Between 2014 and 2016, the door was also closed for repairs and renovations.
This is the most serious cable car accident in Italy since 1998, when a ski lift accident occurred in Cavalise, killing 20 people.
