NRL and AFL have confirmed that the game held in Queensland this weekend has been cancelled because Queensland has entered a fast lockdown.

NRL announced that due to the rapid lockdown in Queensland, all 16 clubs have entered Level 4 biosafety agreements.

The statement read: “All clubs have been advised to notify their players to return to the team hotel and stay in the team hotel until further notice.”

“NRL is working with the Queensland Government, clubs and broadcast partners to determine the best course of action for today’s game.”

The AFL also confirmed that the game held in Queensland this weekend has been temporarily postponed because they are looking for a quick alternative solution.

Travis Auld, executive general manager of AFL clubs and broadcasters, stated that the league will continue to prioritize the health and safety of people in the game and the wider community.

Alder said: “Queensland’s evolving new crown pneumonia epidemic has caused the state to announce a three-day lockdown. Therefore, we have to postpone the three games originally scheduled for the 20th round in Queensland.”

“These games will be rescheduled at a time to be confirmed.”

As the Melbourne Devils left Victoria on Saturday morning but will return to the state capital later today, other travel arrangements have been arranged for the relevant team.

The Brisbane Lions Club has been approved to travel to Tasmania on Saturday morning.

On Saturday morning, Queensland Deputy Governor Steven Miles confirmed 11 LGAs will be blocked for three days starting at 4pm on Saturday.

“The outbreak we notified yesterday now has seven cases. We have seen from the experience of other states that the only way to overcome delta pressure is to act quickly,” Mills said.

“Therefore, starting at 4:00 this afternoon, the 11 LGAs currently required to wear masks will be locked. This will be the strictest lockdown we have ever experienced.”

When asked by reporters, Dr. Yang subsequently confirmed that the football match this weekend would not continue.

“No, there won’t be a football game,” Dr. Yang said.

“So, no community sports, no professional sports, and nothing for the next three days. Starting at 4 o’clock this afternoon.”

The teams in both leagues were in a bubble in Queensland, but the new outbreak left the future of both games in the air.

The state has hosted multiple games in the 20th round of the NRL, but all AFL games in Queensland will also be cancelled.

According to reports, NRL is in emergency talks with the Queensland Government to seek a waiver to continue the game.

The full list of cancelled NRL games includes Newcastle Cavaliers vs. Canberra Raiders, Melbourne Storm vs. Penrith Panthers, Canterbury Bulldogs vs. Gold Coast Titans, and Cronulla Sharks vs. Manly Seahawks.

For the AFL, the current games that will not be played are the Gold Coast Suns vs. Melbourne Devils, Essendon vs. Sydney Swans and GWS Giants vs. Port Adelaide.

The VFL game between the Gold Coast and Southport was cancelled 9 minutes after the start of the first quarter because the players were told to lock up quickly for three days and were asked to leave the field.

As the Delta strain began to spread in Brisbane, Dr. Yang urged people to stay at home.

“Yesterday we had six new community-acquired cases, so now there are seven in this cluster,” Dr. Yang told the media on Saturday morning.

“They are related to two people who returned from overseas and quarantined at the hotel.

“We still don’t have a direct link from one of these two cases to these seven new cases, but I know through whole-genome sequencing that that is where the spread occurred.

“We are now infected with five people in one household.”
