Police revealed an incredible excuse for a man to leave Sydney for the South Coast after fined him nearly 1,500 Australian dollars.
Police said a man from one of Sydney’s coronavirus hotspots was fined a hefty fine after escaping from the city to “watch the sunrise”.
Highway patrol officers stopped the man from Liverpool on the M1 motorway in Wollongong because his speed exceeded the speed limit of 20 km/h.
He was fined for speeding and violating public health orders when he left Sydney without a valid reason.
The man was fined a total of 1,494 US dollars and was ordered to go home.
The police said on Facebook: “Going from the Sydney hotspot to watch the sunrise on the south coast is not a valid excuse for violating the’stay at home’ public health order.”
“It’s not an excuse for speeding either.
“This gentleman was found on the M1 highway in Wollongong at a speed of 107 km/h (in an area of 80 km/h).
“When I stopped, I found the male driver starting from his Liverpool address, watching the sunrise along the south coast.”
Under the strictest lockdown regulations imposed to curb the spread of Covid-19, Liverpool belongs to one of the eight local government jurisdictions in Sydney.
People in these areas are not allowed to leave their LGA unless they are health or aged care workers and can only be 5 kilometers away from home.
