Thousands of American firefighters are battling a fire in California that has become so big that it has created its own weather system, and the authorities warned that the situation could worsen on Monday.
According to experts, the flames have become so large that they produce clouds that can cause lightning and strong winds, which in turn can fuel the fire.
“If these clouds are high enough, they may indeed produce lightning,” warned Julia Ruthford, the government meteorologist in charge of the fire.
Wildfires are common in the state, but this summer was particularly provocative.
Rescuers have been dispatched from as far away as Florida to help control the Dixie fire and its volcanic cumulus cloud.
-‘It’s hard’-
But in these weather conditions, “the embers are really easy to move one mile before the fire,” firefighter spokesman Rick Carhart told AFP.
Carhart also told the media that sometimes firefighters are forced to carry tools on foot through rugged terrain.
Peggy Moak, a resident of a nearby village, told AFP: “It’s so hard to watch it cruelly pass through our woodland.
In golf courses where the grass is yellowed, or in lakes that are almost dry, signs of drought that fuel flames can be seen everywhere.
This power line is owned by Pacific Gas & Company (PG&E), the private operator who was previously convicted of a fire that nearly destroyed the nearby town of Paradise and killed 86 people.
