Gemma Rielly, a horse trainer in Caulfield, couldn’t drive there at all, nor could he ignore the plight of a lonely horse on a property near Wangaratta. This is what she did.
When she saw a thin horse in northern Victoria on Sunday, horse trainer Gemma Rielly’s love for the animal prevailed.
She was working near Wangaratta, when she drove past a horse, looking for good feed in a potentially dangerous place next to the vineyard fence.
“He’s just standing near the fence, in a place where the horse shouldn’t be in the vineyard, it’s pure luck,” Rilly said.
“I thought,’I’d better go check him, in case he goes through the fence, his leg is cut or something’.”
Rielly found that the horse’s leg was not injured, and then tried to report the animal’s condition to RSPCA over the phone, but no one answered.
The online report is all Rielly can provide, but she goes to find food for the horse.
“I drove away, walked along the road for 20 minutes, and came across a farm, which was full of hay and horses and carpeted on it, so I thought,’beauty, I want to go in’,” Rielly said.
“I told him the situation, showed him photos and other things, he gave me all this free hay, I drove back to the horse to send it.”
Rielly said that the horse was weak, but managed to walk a short distance and eat the hay she had put on the fence.
Rielly said the property has two other horses in better condition.
Rielly said Racing Victoria contacted her to get more information about the horse after seeing her social media post on Sunday night.
Rielly said that RV’s welfare team has dealt with the matter and will follow up with RSPCA. Caulfield’s horse trainer stated that RSPCA needs to prioritize the investigation of this horse.
“Victoria is really good,” Rilly said. “The RV Welfare Department called me and they will enter RSPCA and make sure something happens.
“If it is a thoroughbred, they will step in and provide help.
“I have left it in their hands, but if I don’t receive a response from them, I and other contestants will keep in touch with them until something happens.”
