A double Olympian criticized the Queensland government for granting Covid-19 exemptions to NRL players but not to Olympic athletes.

Australian long-distance runner Eloise Wellings issued a double standard to the Queensland government, granting NRL team immunity, but not Olympic athletes.

Wellings, who represented Australia in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics but missed the Tokyo Olympic qualification, expressed on Instagram that she was frustrated by the Olympic track and field athletes due to Sydney’s Covid not being able to join the Keynes team’s bubble before the Tokyo -19 outbreak.

In contrast, Queensland will host nine NRL teams in three separate bubbles across the state to keep the rugby league season going.

Wellings thinks this is unfair, because there are eight track and field athletes, including five-time Australian 400m champion Steve Solomon, hurdler Nick Hoff and 400m athlete Anneris Ruby, because they were Stuck in Sydney and unable to prepare for the Olympics.

“It seems like a double standard to me,” Wellings said in her Instagram story.

“So, wait, 400 NRL football players and staff have received special exemptions and can relocate to Queensland so that the football season can continue.

“But there are eight Olympic track and field athletes who are only a few weeks away from Australia’s participation in the Olympics, but they are still trapped in Sydney’s blockade because they have not been given the same privileges to join the Cairns track and field team to make the final preparations for Tokyo.”

The Australian Athletics Association applied for an exemption but was rejected.

All eight Australian track and field athletes have been vaccinated, and their Covid-19 bubble rules in Sydney are as strict as their Olympic counterparts in the Cairns training camp.
