“A mess”: Fatal riots in South Africa, shops on the outskirts of Johannesburg were looted

On July 13, there was a new report of a robbery in Soweto, a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa, because the riots continued after the sentence of former President Jacob Zuma. The court ruled that Zuma was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment on suspicion of corruption and contempt of court. This triggered several days of violence and robbery. At least 72 people were killed, more than 1,000 people were arrested, and many retail stores were robbed and damaged. A video taken by Motlogelwa J McCone on the morning of Tuesday, July 13th showed heavy smoke coming out of the Protea Glen shopping mall and litter and debris everywhere. According to reports, the shopping center was looted on Monday. The second video taken by McCone on Tuesday night showed people looting shops in and around Sizwe Shopping Centre, which is only minutes away from the police station and Protea Glen Shopping Centre. “You would think that after they ransack the mall, you will have other places that have not been looted but are still protected,” McCon said in his video. “Look at this, brother, it’s a mess here.
