Infectious disease doctor Professor Emma McBryde said that most elderly Australians will need to be vaccinated before political leaders consider giving up the lockdown and coexisting with the coronavirus.
The federal government announced an agreement on Friday that starting in mid-July, 700,000 doses of Pfizer medicines will arrive every week, which is a major boost to the slow vaccination program in the United States.
Professor McBrydge said the focus should be on minimizing deaths and hospitalizations for the most vulnerable groups in the community.
“We will have to do this [live with the virus] At some point, but I think it’s a bad time now because whether we can wait for more vaccinations,” she told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“So far, it is more important for the vulnerable groups, that is, the elderly, to be vaccinated first.
“We want to vaccinate most people over 70 years old, such as those over 70 years old in their 90s and the entire population in their 60s.
“This will not give us herd immunity, but it will allow us to truly be sure that the number of deaths from COVID and hospitalization due to COVID is manageable and not too serious.”
