“Very good reasons” for raising the age of criminal responsibility

Australian legal affairs reporter Nikolai Berkovic said that there are “very good reasons” to support the UN Human Rights Commission’s efforts to raise the age of criminal responsibility.

“There are good reasons not to pursue criminal responsibility for those whose brains have not developed enough to be criminally responsible,” Ms. Bokovic told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

“No one wants to see 10-year-old children sitting in jail instead of getting the help they need in their lives to solve any potential problems that lead to criminal behavior.”

She said that in the end, it is up to the states to decide whether to “modify their laws.”

“If they want, this is not something they can change overnight, but if they want to take a really strong leadership position in this field, they can do so.”
