Police need ‘adequate powers’ amid legislation decriminalising public intoxication

Victorian Police Association Secretary Wayne Gatt says Victorian legislation which will restrict the action police can take against those publicly intoxicated will raise questions about the powers of police.

“What will the expectations be of police, in a new world going forward where this is decriminalised and police don’t have adequate powers to keep the community …safe,” Mr Gatt told Sky News.

He said police need to be given the ability to assist the public and those who are intoxicated when there is a need.

“You need to give us the powers and you need to give us the capacity to help them and to help those people who for whatever reason find themselves intoxicated and have no one else there and then to support them.”
