The New South Wales Police launched a public compliance operation to enforce a stay-at-home order in southwestern Sydney.
Residents remain vigilant. At least 100 additional police officers have been deployed in the area, but Deputy Commissioner Mal Lanyon said this is because it is a “very large geographic area”.
He told Sky News: “We absolutely target compliance in the southwest metropolitan area. In fact, our goal is compliance in the entire Sydney metropolitan area.”
“This is not to change the actions of the police, but just because this is a very large geographic area, so we deployed more police to achieve compliance in the area.
Deputy Commissioner Lanyon said that in the target area, some people walked around the community without wearing a mask, interacting in groups, and urged residents to follow health advice.
“This is not the time for the police and the community to clash, this is the time for the police and the community to work closely together.”
