Scientists are not sure what caused the mud volcano to catch fire, but the most likely theory is that the boulders and rocks that propel upward during the explosion will collide with each other, creating sparks that ignite the gas.
Azerbaijan is known as the “land of fire” because of its underground oil and natural gas reserves. The explorer Marco Polo wrote about the fire caused by burning gas in the 13th century.
