To recap: at the end of the next two rounds, the tournament will split in different ways. The first two counties in each group will enter the first level, the third and fourth-ranked teams will enter the second level, and the last two will enter the third level. Once in these new groups, the team will not play against another team in their original group, but will get half of the points in the two matches against that team in the group stage. So these games may ultimately be crucial.

The first group is the most delicious, with only 9 points between Warwickshire, ranked number one, and Durham, ranked fourth. Essex, the 2019 County Champion and 2020 Bob Willis Trophy winner, must sit and chew their umbrella handle nervously in this round of competition. It is no longer in their hands. Worcestershire and Derbyshire are just competing for pride.

The second group is dominated by Somerset, but even they can be overtaken by 10 points ahead of second place Gloucestershire. Dear Middlesex is the only club to withdraw from the game, even though they have had brilliant moments this season.

Lancashire And Yorkshire looks most likely to enter the third division, but due to the complexity of Covid, they must play against each other in the final round of rescheduling from Scarborough to Headingley. Sussex and Kent are out.
