Wimbledon 2021 results: Ajla Tomglianović vs Jelena Ostapenko cheating, medical timeout, scoring

Before Ostapenko asked for a medical timeout, Tomljanovic led the third set 4-0, won seven consecutive games, and is expected to end the game easily.

The 28-year-old woman was angry that her opponent asked for a coach but did not appear to be hurt in any way.

Over the years, tennis players have been criticized for strategically taking medical timeouts to calm themselves down and stop opponents’ momentum.

“I can’t continue. I’m in pain,” Ostapenko’s old referee.

“You know she’s lying, don’t you? We all know,” Tomglianović argued to the referee. “Have you considered that she looks good?”

Ostapenko was allowed a medical timeout and returned three minutes later and successfully broke Tomglianović’s serve.

But the Australian ended the game and made it clear that she disapproved of Ostapenko’s decision to suspend.

Tomljanovic celebrated the victory before approaching the net, but hesitated before reluctantly holding Ostapenko’s hand, and then there was a fierce exchange.

Ostapenko: If you think I’m cheating, you can talk to a physical therapist.

Tomlyanovic: I hope you are better.

Ostapenko: Your behavior is terrible.Your respect is zero

Tomlyanovic: Honestly, you are the one who speaks.

Ostapenko: what? Too bad, too bad.

The 2017 French Open champion Ostapenko then seemed to call Tomljanovic the “worst player on the tour.”

This confrontation eclipsed a sensational victory by Tom Lianovic. She witnessed her fourth round match at Wimbledon-her best result in a Grand Slam tournament.

At the post-match press conference, Tom Lianovic insisted on his position.

“She can say that she was injured. I don’t think she is,” Tomlyanovic said. “She didn’t have any problems throughout the game, but why did she call at 4-0? So I think this is a clear reason why she wants me to quit the game.

“Then most importantly, she said at the end of the game that I was disrespectful, which was ridiculous.

“I think this is a shameful act of a Grand Slam champion because the kids looked at her and they saw it? Sorry, if she was injured, she could have handled it in a better way.”

This incident evoked unpleasant memories of Tomjanovich. In the 2019 WTA finals in Hua Hin, Thailand, when Ukrainian opponent Dayana Yastremska requested a medical timeout due to a leg injury, she led 5-2 in the deciding game.

The delay caused the Australians to lose motivation and eventually lose the game. Tomljanovic said she is increasingly frustrated that the medical suspension is being used as a strategy.

“In fact, she did it with a score of 4-0 when I was about to serve today, which is disrespectful,” she said. “Honestly, I’m tired of it. I’m tired of it happening and seeing it happen. We can do better.”

Ostapenko, ranked 34th in the world and entered the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2018, insisted that her injury was real and that the pain became more and more serious as the game progressed.

“I think what she did is very disrespectful. I mean, if you don’t know anything about my injury, how can you say something like a’liar’,” the Latvian said.

“You can’t say that. Call me a liar in front of everyone? I don’t think this is respect for her.

“So this is what I said,’Because of this behavior, you are a very bad player.’ That’s it. You win, but it doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want.”

Ostapenko won the Eastbourne championship on the eve of Wimbledon. She insisted that if she was healthy, she could have easily made the round of 16.

“I think my level today was not good after the first set, because if I played at least 50%, I would beat her,” she said.
